What BIAB actually is and why people choose it.

BIAB is a thicker, flexible gel that is applied in a thin layer over your own nail and then cures under a lamp. BIAB makes your nail stronger and doesn't lengthen it. That's why people start with it. If you have thin nails that keep tearing just past the nail bed, you can finally grow beyond that point, because the weak spot is supported.

The difference from ordinary gel polish lies in the thickness of the layer and the flexibility. Gel polish is first and foremost colour and sits on your nail as a thin coat of polish. If the nail underneath tears, the gel polish tears with it. BIAB, on the other hand, absorbs that movement. Compared with acrylic, BIAB is more supple and feels less hard, so it bends with the nail instead of snapping.

What you get in return is mostly peace of mind. Your nail doesn't break off at the wrong moment and the colour doesn't chip after a week. On the other hand, you do need to pop in every three to four weeks to have the regrowth infilled.

From a fresh set to time for the next one.

Your nails grow about three millimetres a month, and that sets the rhythm.

  1. Days 1 and 2

Take care for a little while

The layer has cured under the lamp and is dry straight away, so you can just put your coat on. Even so, for the first few days it's better not to use your nails as a screwdriver or tin opener. Really, it's better never to do that.

  2. Weeks 1 and 2

    The best-looking period

Shine and colour are at their best. Wear gloves when cleaning and in the garden, because harsh products are the quickest way to lose the shine.

  3. Weeks 3 and 4

    Regrowth becomes visible

At the cuticle you see a thin strip of your own nail appear. This is the moment to book a new appointment. If you wait longer, the weight shifts towards the tip of the nail and the layer lifts sooner.

  4. After that

An infill is better than a new set

The regrowth is filled in and the layer is rebalanced. That's better for your own nail than removing everything and building it up again every time.

When it works and what to watch out for.

A good idea if

  • Your nails keep tearing or splitting before they've gained any length.
  • You want colour that lasts a few weeks instead of a few days.
  • You bite your nails and want something that breaks the habit.
  • You work with your hands and want your nails to stand up to that.

Check with us first

  • Picking at it or taking it off yourself damages your own nail. Have it removed or filed off properly.
  • If you currently have a set from another salon, say when booking what's on your nails. Then enough time can be planned for it.
  • With a damaged or inflamed cuticle, it's wise to let it heal first.
  • If you need to be somewhere afterwards, check the duration. It's listed with every treatment in the price list.

What you do at home makes a week's difference.

Cuticle oil is the boring answer that really works. A drop a day keeps the edge supple, so the layer lifts less quickly and your hands look better cared for. It takes you two minutes a week.

Gloves when cleaning and washing up do the rest. Hot soapy water and cleaning products are the biggest cause of dull nails and edges that lift. And don't use your nails to prise things open, however handy it is.

If a corner does come loose, don't pull at it. Get in touch with The Nailbar, and it can be touched up. Pulling it off takes a layer of your own nail with it, and that takes months to grow out.

Frequently asked questions about The Nailbar

What exactly is BIAB?

BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle. It is a strengthening gel over your own nail, for a natural, strong look. It does not extend your nail.

Does Moons do the nail treatments itself?

No, your nails are done by the independent specialist at The Nailbar. They are at the same address as Moons, and you book in The Nailbar's booking calendar.

What is the difference between BIAB and gel polish?

Gel polish is colour in a thin layer. BIAB is a thicker, flexible gel that strengthens your own nail. Gel polish follows the nail underneath, so if that tears, the polish tears with it. BIAB absorbs that. You can also combine them, with BIAB as the base and gel polish on top.

Does BIAB damage my own nails?

Damage almost always happens during removal. Picking it off yourself takes layers of your own nail with it. Have it removed or infilled properly, and your own nail stays intact.

How long does BIAB or gel polish last?

Three to four weeks on average. After that you see regrowth appear at the cuticle, and that's the moment to have it infilled. If you wait until something lifts, you're really too late.

Can I have my nails extended with tips or acrylic?

No, all treatments are for your own nail. BIAB makes your nail stronger, so you can grow the length yourself. It doesn't extend your nail.

Who does the nail treatment?

The nail specialist at The Nailbar, an independent specialist based here in our building. You book in The Nailbar's own online booking calendar and are welcomed at the same address.

Can I have my nails and a pedicure done on the same day?

Often yes. For a pedicure you go to Elisa's Pedicure, also at this address. You book that in the booking calendar of Elisa's Pedicure, so choose two times that follow on from each other.
