In brief
- A peel is possible in summer, if you stay out of the sun in the weeks afterwards and apply sun protection every morning.
- If you have just been in the sun or on a sunbed, we wait about two weeks before doing peels or microneedling.
- Don't plan a peel in the two weeks before a sun holiday. A cleansing or hydrating treatment is fine then.
- We don't do the herbal peel in summer. The maker advises against it in months with a lot of sun.
- For a series of peels or microneedling we prefer autumn and winter. Cleansing, hydration and connective tissue massage can be done all year round.

Why the sun matters.
After a peel or microneedling your skin is more sensitive to UV for a while. A peel loosens the top layer, and after microneedling your skin is busy recovering. The sun then hits harder. You burn more easily, and with pigmentation the marks come back just as hard if you don't apply sun protection.
It works the other way round too. If you have just been in the sun or on a sunbed, your skin is still in build-up mode: it makes extra pigment and gets a little thicker. We don't want to work on that, so we wait about two weeks.
So a treatment in summer is quite possible, as long as you stay one step ahead of the sun. With a series that takes months, that is a lot easier in autumn and winter.
What is possible in summer?
Per treatment at Moons, from the mild ones to the ones after which your skin needs a moment to recover.
| Topic | In summer | What to look out for |
|---|---|---|
| Facial cleanse | Possible | Just been in the sun? Let us know and we work more gently |
| Hydra treatment | Possible | Nice in the week after your holiday, when sun, salt and chlorine have dried out your skin |
| Connective tissue massage | Possible | Your skin doesn't need to recover and doesn't turn red from it |
| Fruit acid peel | Possible, if you stay out of the sun | Apply sun protection every morning in the weeks afterwards and skip the sunbed |
| Mandelic acid peel | Possible, if you stay out of the sun | A mild peel, which we also choose for pigmentation. We don't peel sunburnt skin |
| Herbal peel | Preferably not | The maker advises against it in summer. Autumn and winter are the best time |
| Microneedling | Possible, although we prefer autumn | Stay out of the sun for the first few days and apply sun protection every day after that |
Feel free to add LED therapy. There is no UV in the light, so your skin doesn't tan from it and can't burn from it.
Around a sun holiday, here is how to plan it.
Two weeks before
The last peel
Plan your last peel or microneedling no later than two weeks before you leave. A cleansing or hydrating treatment is possible in the week before too.
On holiday
Apply and reapply
At least SPF 30, and SPF 50 if you are out all day. Outdoors you reapply every two hours, with SPF 50 too.
Just back
Two weeks of rest first
Your skin is still in build-up mode, so peels and microneedling wait for about two weeks. A hydrating treatment is possible, and is especially nice then.
In autumn
Starting a series
You have the whole winter to build up slowly, before the sun gets stronger again. More in your skin after summer.
After your treatment in the sun.
Apply every morning
In the weeks after a peel or microneedling you apply sun protection every morning, even when it is cloudy. UVA passes through clouds and windows.
Out of the sun for the first few days
Your skin is at its most sensitive then. If you have to go outside, look for the shade and apply sun protection properly.
Your day cream is not enough
You spread a day cream thinly, and then you don't reach the protection factor on the packaging. So use a separate sunscreen.
The sunbed can wait
Skip the sunbed in the weeks after a treatment. Your skin is more sensitive to UV then.
Broad spectrum, at least SPF 30
Choose a sun protection that also protects against UVA. How much to use and how often to reapply is explained under sun protection.
What is possible all year round.
Cleansing, hydration and connective tissue massage can be done all year round, even in the middle of summer.

Frequently asked questions about peel in summer
Can you have a peel in summer?
Yes, if you stay out of the sun in the weeks afterwards and apply sun protection every morning. If you have just been in the sun or are going on a sun holiday within two weeks, we would rather plan it for another time. We don't do the herbal peel in summer.
Can you go in the sun after a peel?
Preferably not, and in any case not without protection. Your skin is more sensitive to UV after a peel. Stay out of the sun for the first few days and apply sun protection every morning in the weeks after, even when it is cloudy.
Can you have microneedling in summer?
It's possible. Stay out of the sun for the first few days and apply sun protection every day after that. For a whole course we prefer autumn and winter, because the sun is less strong then.
Can you go in the sun after microneedling?
Not in the first few days. After that you apply sun protection every day, and with pigmentation that is really necessary. What else to do in the days after is explained under microneedling.
What do you do about the sun after a Dermapen treatment?
The same as after microneedling, because at Moons we do microneedling with the Dermapen. Stay out of the sun for the first few days and apply sun protection every morning after that.
How long before a holiday can you have a peel?
Up to two weeks before you leave. In the last two weeks before you go, we no longer plan a peel. A cleansing or hydrating treatment is possible then.
How long after a sun holiday can you have a peel?
After about two weeks. After the sun your skin is still in build-up mode, and we don't want to work on that. The same goes for microneedling, and after the sunbed too.
Can you have a peel if you are sunburnt?
No, we don't peel sunburnt skin. We plan the peel for later, when your skin has settled again.
Can you use a sunbed after a peel?
No, skip the sunbed in the weeks after a peel. If you have been on a sunbed before your appointment, we wait about two weeks.
Why can't you have a herbal peel in summer?
The maker advises against it in summer and in months with a lot of sun. After three to four days your skin peels, and the new layer underneath needs sun protection every day. Autumn and winter are therefore the best time.
Which facial treatment can you have in summer?
A facial cleanse, a hydrating treatment and connective tissue massage can be done all year round. If you have just been in the sun, let us know. Then we work more gently.
When is the best time for a peel?
Autumn and winter. Your skin catches less sun then, and you have the whole winter to build up slowly. A mild peel is possible in summer too, if you apply sun protection properly.
Can you have a pigmentation treatment in summer?
That's possible, although autumn and winter are a better time. In summer we choose milder treatments and ask you to be strict about sun protection. More under pigmentation.
Can you have LED therapy in summer?
Yes. There is no UV in the light, so your skin doesn't tan from it and can't burn from it.
Which sun protection should you use after a peel?
At least SPF 30 and broad spectrum, so against UVA too. If you are outdoors all day, SPF 50 is better. More important than the number is that you use enough and reapply every two hours.
What does a peel cost at Moons?
At Moons in Enschede a peel costs €69.00 to €89.00 per session, depending on the type. All prices are on the prices page.
