Lash lift or lash perm?

Curl or lift: the difference, and what suits your lashes.
A client with blonde hair and lifted lashes, just after a lash lift

In brief

  • A lash perm gives your lashes a round curl. To do this, they are wrapped around a small, round rod.
  • A lash lift sets your lashes upwards from the root, over a silicone shield. They look longer and your eyes look more open.
  • Both work with two lotions, and both grow out in six to eight weeks, along with your own lashes.
  • The names are often mixed up. So ask what a salon means: a curl or a lift.
  • At Moons we do the classic lash lift, with a round curl, and the Korean lash lift, straight up from the root.

The difference in short.

A lash perm and a lash lift work in the same way. A first lotion loosens the bonds that give the hair its shape, and a second one sets them again in the new shape. It works like a perm for the hair on your head, only very small.

The difference is in what your lashes rest on. With a lash perm, they are wrapped around a small, round rod. That gives a round curl, right to the tips. With a lash lift, they lie over a silicone shield on your eyelid. They are then set upwards from the root, so you see them along their whole length.

The lash perm is the older technique. With the lash lift, which came later, your lashes mainly stand up instead of curling round.

Everything about the lift itself, from aftercare to what to do if it got wet, is in lash lift: all you need to know.

What suits you?

  • You mainly want curl

Then choose the classic lash lift. It gives a round curl along the whole length, like a lash perm, and makes your lashes look fuller.

  • You mainly want an open look

Then choose the Korean lash lift. Your lashes come straight up from the root and look longer.

  • Your lashes grow downwards

Then a lift from the root does the most. Afterwards they no longer hang in front of your eye.

  • You're not sure

Have your lashes looked at first. The choice follows from their length, thickness and the direction they grow in.

Good to know before you book.

  • The names get mixed up

Lash perm, lash lift, eyelash lift and permanent lash curl: salons don't all use these words in the same way. Ask what you will get, a round curl or a lift from the root.

  • Permanent is not forever

The word says something about the lotion, not about how long it lasts. After six to eight weeks your lashes are back to how they were.

  • They are your own lashes

Nothing is lengthened or glued on. If your lashes are short or thin, the effect is smaller than in the photos you see online.

  • Colour can be added

Tinting can be done in the same appointment. The lift opens up your eyes, and the colour makes your lashes visible right to the tip.

With tint added it costs €55.00 and €65.00. You'll find all prices on the prices page.

Frequently asked questions about lash lift or lash perm

What is the difference between a lash lift and a lash perm?

With a lash perm, your lashes are wrapped around a small rod and get a round curl. With a lash lift, they lie over a silicone shield and are set upwards from the root. Both use the same kind of lotions and both last six to eight weeks.

What is a lash perm?

A treatment that gives your own lashes a round curl with two lotions. Your lashes are wrapped around a small rod to do this. It works like a perm for the hair on your head, only very small.

Which is better, a lash perm or a lash lift?

That depends on what you want. If you mainly want curl, a lash perm or a classic lash lift suits you. If you want an open look and lashes that look longer, a lift from the root suits you, such as the Korean lash lift.

Can you have your lashes curled permanently?

Yes, for six to eight weeks. That is how long a curl or lift grows along with your own lashes. The word permanent says something about the lotion, not about how long it lasts.

How long does a lash perm last?

Six to eight weeks, just like a lash lift. Your lashes renew themselves, and so the curl gradually grows out.

Is a lash perm bad for your lashes?

Doing it too often or leaving the lotion on too long can make your lashes dry and brittle. That applies to a perm and to a lift. That is why there are at least six weeks between two lash lifts.

Do you do lash perms?

A lash perm with rods is not on our price list. If you want a round curl, choose the classic lash lift. If you want your lashes straight up, choose the Korean lash lift.

Can you have your lashes curled and tinted in one appointment?

Yes. At Moons a classic lash lift with tint costs €55.00 and a Korean lash lift with tint costs €65.00.

Do you still need to curl your lashes after a lash lift?

No, because your lashes already stand up. You won't need an eyelash curler for six to eight weeks.

Can you perm your own lashes?

There are kits for sale, but it takes precision, right next to your eyes. If the lotion works too briefly, you see little. If it works too long, your lashes can become dry or kink. More in lash lift.

What does a lash lift cost at Moons?

At Moons in Enschede a classic lash lift costs €50.00 and a Korean lash lift €60.00. You'll find all prices on the prices page.
