Korean lash lift: everything you want to know

Every question about the lift that sets lashes upright.
A brown eye with lifted, tinted lashes after a Korean lash lift, seen up close

In brief

  • A Korean lash lift lifts your own lashes from the root. They come straight up out of the lash line, with little curl.
  • The difference from a regular lash lift is in the shape. Korean gives an open look and length, the classic lift a round curl.
  • The lift stays visible for six to eight weeks. Korean and classic last equally long.
  • For the first 24 hours your lashes stay dry. After that mascara is fine again, ideally one that comes off without oil.
  • At Moons in Enschede a Korean lash lift costs €60.00, with tint €65.00.

What is a Korean lash lift?

A Korean lash lift is a lash lift in which your own lashes are lifted from the root. A flat shield is placed on your eyelid. The lashes are laid over it hair by hair and set in that position. That puts the bend at the root, while the rest of the lash stands straight up.

The result is an open look. Your lashes look longer, because you now see them along their whole length. Nothing is extended or glued on: they are your own lashes in a different position.

The technique comes from South Korea, hence the name. You will also come across Korean eyelash lift and Korean lash lifting. They are the same thing.

Korean or regular lash lift: which one suits you?

With a regular, classic lash lift the lashes lie over a curved shield. That gives a round curl. Which of the two suits you depends on your lashes.

  • Straight or stiff lashes

Choose Korean. A lift from the root does the most for these lashes.

  • Lashes that grow downwards

Choose Korean. They come up out of the lash line, so they no longer hang in front of your eye.

  • Lashes with some curl already

Choose classic. The round curl follows what your lashes already do.

  • You mainly want fuller lashes

Choose classic. A visible curl makes your lashes look fuller.

  • Very short lashes

Both work, but you see less of it. You should be told that beforehand, before you pay for it.

  • You don't know

Have your lashes looked at first. The choice follows from their length, thickness and direction of growth.

Korean lash lift, LVL or keratin lift?

There are many names around the lash lift. Most are brands or methods that come down to the same thing: the lash is given a new position.

TopicWhat it isThe difference from Korean
Classic lash liftThe lift over a curved shieldA round curl, where Korean stands straight up
LVLA brand name, in full length volume liftAlso a lift from the root. The difference is in the products
Keratin lash liftA lift with keratin in the nourishing stepKeratin is about the care. The shape can be round or straight
Lash fillerA lift with a product that is meant to thicken the lashIt is about the thickness of the lash. The lift itself works the same
Lash botoxA nourishing treatment for lashes, often after a liftNo botox is involved. It is a name for a care treatment
Lash laminationAnother name for a lash liftThe name says nothing about the shape of the lift

At Moons we do the Korean and the classic lash lift, both with or without tint. We finish every lift with a nourishing step.

How long does a Korean lash lift last?

Six to eight weeks. Your lashes renew themselves constantly, so the lift gradually grows out. It never suddenly looks grown out.

Online you sometimes read that a Korean lift lasts longer than a regular one, or is better for your lashes. There is no hard evidence for that. Both grow out with your own lashes and last equally long.

There should be at least six weeks between two lifts. That gives your lashes time to renew themselves.

Before and after: what do you see?

You see it as soon as you open your eyes. Your eyes look more open and your lashes look longer. On the first day the lift can still look a little stiff. It relaxes slightly after that.

Between the second and the fifth week the lift is at its best. It looks natural then, and you don't have to do anything for it. Curling your lashes with a lash curler is no longer needed.

If you have light lash tips, a tint makes the effect stronger. The lift opens your eyes, and the colour makes your lashes visible right to the tip. Photos of our own clients are on the results page.

Water, mascara, oil: what is allowed when?

TopicFirst 24 hoursAfter that
Water and showeringKeep your lashes dryFine
Sauna, pool and exerciseSkip themFine again
MascaraLeave it offFine again. Choose one you can remove without oil
Waterproof mascaraLeave it offBetter not. You usually remove it with oil
Oil around your eyesDon't use itLeave it out. Oil makes the lift drop sooner
Rubbing and sleepingDon't touch them, and don't sleep with your face in the pillowRub your eyes as little as possible

Brush your lashes into shape every day with a clean spoolie. A lash serum is fine from the second day.

A Korean lash lift at home with a kit?

Kits are sold for doing it at home. The risk is in the place and in the timing. You work with lotions millimetres from your eye, and on yourself you cannot see what you are doing.

The processing time and the placement of each hair decide whether it turns out well. If a lotion stays on too long, or a lash lies crooked on the shield, it gets a kink. That only grows out after weeks.

What to look for when choosing a salon?

These are the signs of a place that handles your lashes with care.

  • They look first

At the length, thickness and direction of growth of your lashes. The technique follows from that.

  • The shield fits your eye

The size is chosen on the shape of your eye and the length of your lashes.

  • They ask about allergies

If you have ever reacted to tint, a test should be done beforehand.

  • The processing time fits your lashes

Stiff lashes need a little more time than fine ones.

  • You get an explanation of the first day

The first 24 hours decide how long the lift stays looking good.

  • You can see real work

Photos of their own clients and what others write. Ours are on the results page and under reviews.

Is your eye still red or painful?

If your eye becomes red, swollen or painful after a lash lift, or keeps watering, don't wait and call your GP. Also tell the salon where you had it done. If you have an eye infection, a stye or an allergic reaction, the lift waits until that has passed.

Frequently asked questions about Korean lash lift

What is a Korean lash lift?

A lash lift in which your own lashes are lifted from the root. They come straight up out of the lash line. That gives an open look, and your lashes look longer.

What is the difference between a Korean lash lift and a regular lash lift?

With a regular lash lift the lashes lie over a curved shield, which gives a round curl. With the Korean technique the bend sits at the root and the rest of the lash stands straight up.

Is a Korean lash lift better than a regular lash lift?

It is a different shape. Straight, stiff or downward-growing lashes often get more out of Korean. That it lasts longer or is healthier for your lashes has not been proven.

How long does a Korean lash lift last?

Six to eight weeks, depending on how fast your lashes grow. The lift gradually grows out.

How often can you get a Korean lash lift?

With at least six weeks in between. That gives your lashes time to renew themselves.

How long does a Korean lash lift take?

At Moons it takes an hour. You lie with your eyes closed the whole time.

Does a Korean lash lift hurt?

No. At most you feel the light pressure of the shield on your eyelid.

Can a Korean lash lift get wet?

Not for the first 24 hours. Skip the sauna, the pool and a heavy workout during that time too. After that everything is fine again.

Can you wear waterproof mascara on a Korean lash lift?

Better not. You usually remove waterproof mascara with an oil-based product, and oil makes the lift drop sooner. Regular mascara is fine after 24 hours.

Does a Korean lash lift work on short lashes?

The lift works, but on very short lashes you see less of it. Stiff and straight lashes actually benefit the most.

Can you get a Korean lash lift with tint?

Yes. With light lash tips the colour makes the effect stronger. At Moons the lift with tint costs €65.00.

Can you get a Korean lash lift during pregnancy?

Let us know when you book. Then we discuss whether to leave out the tint. If you are in doubt, ask your midwife as well.

Can you get a Korean lash lift if you wear contact lenses?

Yes. You take your lenses out before the treatment, so bring a case.

Can you get a Korean lash lift after lash extensions?

Only once the extensions are completely out. Have them removed first.

LVL is a brand name for a lift that also lifts the lashes from the root. The difference is in the products that are used.
