Dermapen: what is it?

The pen behind microneedling: how it works, what you feel.
Microneedling with the Dermapen on the forehead

In brief

  • A dermapen is a pen with very fine needles that is used for microneedling. At Moons, a dermapen treatment and microneedling are the same thing.
  • With the pen we set the depth per zone: around your eyes we work less deeply than on your cheeks. The needles go straight in and straight out, and are sterile and single-use.
  • A dermaroller for home use doesn't give you that control. With it you risk irritation and damage.
  • During the treatment we work in a cocktail of active ingredients. Through the channels your skin absorbs them far better than when you apply them at home.
  • At Moons a dermapen treatment costs €89.00 to €119.00, depending on the cocktail and whether you add LED therapy.

What a dermapen actually is.

A dermapen is an electric pen with a head full of very fine needles. The pen moves up and down in a fast rhythm and so makes thousands of tiny channels in the top layer of your skin. Your skin repairs them and makes new collagen and elastin in the process.

Microneedling is the name of the treatment, the dermapen is the device. That is why you come across both names for the same thing. At Moons we work with the Dermapen.

There are other pens too, such as the SkinPen. They work in the same way. What matters is who operates the pen: the right depth per zone, and skin that is ready for it at that moment.

If you want to do something for your skin at home, a good routine with sun protection does more. See the order of your skincare.

A dermapen treatment step by step.

  1. Beforehand

    Numbing

A numbing cream goes on your skin and takes twenty minutes to work. During the treatment you then mainly feel vibration and a slight scratchy feeling.

  2. The treatment

    The pen and the cocktail

We go over your face zone by zone and work in the active ingredients at the same time. Around your nose and on your forehead it is a bit more sensitive. A treatment takes 50 minutes, with LED therapy 75.

  3. The days after

    Red, then calm

Your skin is red for one to two days, roughly like after a day in the sun. Make-up is fine from the third day, ideally you leave it off for two weeks.

  4. After a course

    The result

After one or two sessions your skin often already looks smoother and fresher. You see the full result after about three months, after a course of four to six sessions.

Which cocktail suits you?

With the Dermapen we work in a Meso Cocktail by Yellow Rose. Which one depends on what your skin needs.

You can add LED therapy for €20.00. You'll find all prices on the prices page.

When it's possible, and when not.

A good idea if

  • You have small scars left over from old spots
  • Your skin feels less firm and you see fine lines appearing
  • You have pigmentation that doesn't improve with skincare alone
  • You want to commit to a course and a routine at home

Check with us first

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Then we don't do microneedling
  • Active, inflamed spots or a skin infection. Then we wait until your skin has calmed down
  • Recent sun or sunbed. Then we wait about two weeks
  • Blood thinners or medication that makes your skin vulnerable, such as isotretinoin. Check with your GP or specialist first

Frequently asked questions about Dermapen

What is a dermapen?

An electric pen with very fine needles that is used for microneedling. The needles make thousands of tiny channels in the top layer of your skin, and your skin makes new collagen as it repairs them.

Is a dermapen treatment the same as microneedling?

Yes. Microneedling is the treatment, the dermapen is the pen we use for it. More about the treatment is in microneedling.

Which is better, a dermapen or a dermaroller?

With the dermapen we set the depth per zone, and the needles go straight in and straight out. They are sterile and single-use. With a roller at home you have no control over the depth and you risk irritation and damage.

What is the difference between a dermapen and a SkinPen?

Both are microneedling pens, from different brands. They work in the same way. At Moons we work with the Dermapen.

Does a dermapen treatment hurt?

First a numbing cream goes on, which takes twenty minutes to work. After that you mainly feel vibration and a slight scratchy feeling. Around your nose and on your forehead it is a bit more sensitive.

How long are you red after a dermapen treatment?

Usually one to two days, roughly like after a day in the sun. After that your skin may be dry or flake slightly for a few days.

How often do you have a dermapen treatment?

In a course of four to six sessions, with three to four weeks in between. After that comes maintenance.

What does a dermapen treatment cost?

At Moons in Enschede €89.00 to €119.00 per session, depending on the cocktail and whether you add LED therapy.

What is a dermapen serum?

At Moons it is a Meso Cocktail by Yellow Rose that we work in during the treatment: with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, collagen, brightening active ingredients or PDRN with exosomes.

Can a dermapen be used under your eyes?

Yes. Around your eyes we work less deeply than on your cheeks. More about the skin under your eyes is in bags and dark circles.

Can a dermapen treatment be combined with LED?

Yes. LED therapy after the treatment costs €20.00 extra and takes twenty minutes. The light calms your skin and helps it recover faster.

Can you go in the sun after a dermapen treatment?

Not in the first days. After that you apply sun protection every day. More in a peel in summer.

Can you buy a dermapen for home use?

They are for sale online, but at home you have no control over the depth and hygiene is difficult. In the salon the needles are sterile and single-use.
